I don't eat sushi, but always try to find places that use brown rice for Chinese food. Sadly our favorite local place doesn't.

There are many things I love brown rice on. I can't imagine trying to eat macrobiotic food, for example, with white. And for plain rice and butter, brown can't be beat. But sushi? Nooooooooooooo.........

Never tried it.

I LOVE NUTRITIONAL YEAST, by the way.

The weird thing is, I only became aware of brown rice sushi tonight seeing a sign advertising it at the grocery store. My husband bought some (he actually likes sushi) by accident. He's actually been avoiding brown rice sushi because he looked at it as a marketing ploy aimed at hippies. However, he said that it was pretty good, stating that his answer for your poll would be "A perfectly good variant". :)

I'm not a purist. If someone wants to make a sushi roll with brown rice, cream cheese, deli mustard, and rainbow sprinkles, more power to 'em.

That having been said, brown rice is tasty and would work well with heartier fillings.

Yeah, I think that's where I'm leaning. Traditional maki where the fish and vegetables are supposed to be the centerpiece? Hmm, not real sure that's a good idea. Weird fusion maki that are specifically made to stand up to a whole grain's earthiness? Sure, why not. I'm thinking exotic mushroom fillings (no, not THAT exotic :D ) or maybe grilled meats?

Since brown rice has all sorts of history of being poor food, prison food, old people food etc., it is silly to me that the brown rice sushi in the grocery store here is more expensive, and more la-ti-da.

Other: "Let's all go to Genki Ya in Brookline next time you visit!" (They're mostly organic, are getting rave reviews, and have a seven-grain chirashi that sounds really interesting.)

OTOH, so far I haven't been impressed with the one time I had sushi with brown rice -- but that was a quickie takeout from Whole Funds Market and probably couldn't compare to something from right behind the bar at a real restaurant. Still, I love brown rice in general, but not convinced for sushi. It seems like the nuttiness and firmness would detract from the more delicate flavors.

So...? How'd it come out?

I'm not actually a sushi fan... I don't like seaweed. I much prefer sashimi.
