I haven't been good about doing the "six reviews a day with little links to them" thing with the BPAL, and I've got a big pile of notes I wanted to share here. So, here they are. More organization later perhaps. I just ordered half-imps from a decant circle of the ten new salon scents, and have around a dozen other things either waiting here to be tried or on their way.

Estimated time to burnout and/or picking 3 scents and wearing them: six months. I realized I've kind of been neglecting some of my incense evaluation to do this stuff, and since that's supposedly business, I should try to motivate myself to get back to it.

Anyway, pile of reviews. Probably not well edited.

I'm doing something of a declutter, and double-deep stacked bookshelves were on my list to work on. Therefore, for you, my friends, a big pile of interesting books.

Anything on this list is yours for the price of my getting it to you, which means the cost of parcel post shipping cost plus a buck or so for packing materials and PayPal fees. Unless you live in Boston or so, in which the cost is waiting until Memorial Day and then promising to get them from my girlfriend very soon after that so they don't move from a pile in my home to a pile in her home for very long.

Let me know either by commenting here, or by email to beetiger AT LJ.

I keep getting confused because on my breastfeeding communities, EBM stands for expressed breastmilk, but on my BPAL communities, it stands for Enraged Bunny Musk.

Indulge me?

'Cause I need a little food for thought, a totally "talk about me" kind of meme.

Please respond with a song lyric (need not be the whole song) that reminds you of me.

Then put this in your own lj and see what lyrics you get.

(But to make it worth your while to look at this, I offer you the new freakypear userpic. It totally reminds me of [livejournal.com profile] pyat.)

I've been trying to test a developing backlog of BPAL scent imps I've acquired over the last few weeks. This means that in the mornings, I'm mostly alternating between something I know I like, and something new. In the evenings, I've also been trying some things that seem eveningish before bedtime.

Last night, at about the appropriate time, I tried on "Midnight", which the website describes as "An ethereal bouquet of night-blooming flowers. Evening primrose, ruellia, flowering nicotiana, wild petunia, panani-o-kai, night phlox, night gladiolus, moonflower and the elusive scent of Nottingham Catchfly.". That's pretty much right -- it's a lovely melange of white night-blooming flowers. But more dramatically, at least for me, it's the smell of insomnia. It's a walking garden somewhere in the South, on a day that was way too hot, but the evening's cooled down. You're alone in the moonlight after everyone else has gone somewhere else. Somehow you didn't want to join them but you're not ready to go to sleep yet.

So of course, then I couldn't sleep. I lay awake in my bed for an hour or two, sniffing the perfumed air and feeling a little melancholy.

This is a devastating scent for me right now, a calm solitude shot through with moody wakefulness, not at all what I need. But it's really perfect in terms of the design of a gothic perfume. It's beautiful, evocative, and brings forth a mood that's really not for everyone.

Morels, I think.
Originally uploaded by vickithebee.

I discovered these, and about ten of their friends, growing under our porch yesterday after the Weekend Of Much Rain. I'm 99% sure they are delicious morels -- they look right, the timing and location are right...but I'm still not brave enough to collect mushrooms from my yard, especially since I've also got shitakes growing on a sanitized sawdust log in my bedroom. If you're local, and brave, and want to stop by in the next day or two and get them, feel free!

On a lovely day ten years ago today, [profile] bard_bloom and I had a wedding. I don't know if I fit into the dress anymore, but I know I still fit into this love.

No one could be a better partner for all the roads I walk in this life than you, my sweet. Happy Anniversary, Bard.

Anyone have some good instructions/patterns/tips for making small, simple, handsewn stuffed animals? (ie not with a sewing machine, just needle and thread)? I've got this idea in my head that I want to try to do that, but I'm not sure where to start.

[personal profile] projectmothra is sight-reading some phenomenal number of words these days. He's just randomly walking around places, trying to read signs, and getting them kind of right more often than not. (It say "Please Flush"! This store is "Closed on Sunday"! "Men"! That the bathroom of going with Daddy!" That lady's shirt saying "Soccer"!) It's kind of boggling. He'd been "playing" our Apples to Apples set by trying to read the cards, so we just bought him Apples to Apples Junior so he'd be able to get more choices like "Hot Wheels Cars" and "Cowboys" and fewer like "Henry Mancini" and "Adolf Hitler".

In any case, as I mentioned, his sight reading vocabulary is huge, but he doesn't have any interest in phonetics/sounding out words. He knows all his letters and the primary sounds they make, but he's somewhere between uninterested and incapable of "sounding out" a word even if I guide him heavily through it. He'd rather I tell him the word so he remembers it next time he comes across it.

My friends who know more about Early Education than I do: should I be fussing about trying to help him get the sounding out concept, or should I just let him build an arsenal of sight-read words and not fuss about it?

I got the opportunity to go to [livejournal.com profile] duckydoo's book release party for "Sex with the Lights On" at the sextoy store Babeland in New York on Tuesday night. I was all *squee fangirl* at her, but she remembered me from when [personal profile] lediva and I went to a clown fetish performance of hers a few years back, and she hugged me and signed my book and all that good stuff. Plus the fruit that was available to nibble on at the party was served on a lovely woman, so that pretty much made my night a second time. I think I was gentle enough with my toothpick.

After my companion got off the train, I got a chance to flip through the book, and discovered that I was quoted in one of the "True Tales" sections of the book, and that [livejournal.com profile] lediva was quoted talking about me in another one of them. It was definitely a thrill reading that on the train. And somehow, somewhere, maybe those little anonymous comments will help somebody feel better about their body or something.

(No, I'm not going to repost the quotes here or refer you to them directly. If you get the book and have guesses about which comments are ours, drop me an email and I'll confirm.)

Another set of reviews. Still have more in the queue to share, and more in the box to try.
Compared to the $2K I just spent on a swingset, this still seems affordable.
I feel so exhausted lately. It's like I'm doing way too much and way too little at the same time.
I need a BPAL icon.

In my sampler for this month, I got a baby onesie from Max and Otis Shirt Co.

It's a lightweight fabric with blue stars and trim, an it says "Brat" in black lettering. It's marked as "Large" and looks to me to be a 12 month size.

I wouldn't give a shirt that said that to anyone without asking if they'd like it, and I'd probably gift one of my own designs in any case if I were gifting for an occasion. I hate to leave it sitting around, though, if someone could use it.

Any of you parents with little ones interested? I'll send it gratis to the first commenter who wants it.

A picture for record keeping, because I ended up making exactly 100 of these, so they're all on the way to Marie. Images from an old catalog of a collection of Greek pottery that visited the Louvre about 15 years ago, collected at my local used bookstore for $2.50, and transformed into one-inch buttons. I <3 my button press.

Sorry the plastic bags made them look all fuzzy. They say "Recovered Shards" on them.

Well, I didn't actually get any comments on the last round, so perhaps you guys aren't interested after all, but hey, it's content.

I've gone a little Orrenish on the BPAL thing lately --joining the forums and communities, purchasing a whole bunch of imps from the thriving aftermarket, making lists of stuff I want to try, and of course, writing down reviews of everything as I make my way through them. I just realized I've got quite a backlog of unposted reviews, and at least some of you expressed interest in hearing what I thought. And, well...I owe all of you some non-whiny content.

This set is borrowed/gifted from the generous [profile] cynthiarose. Thank you!

Went to the New City Diner this weekend. I want to do a review of that place for you guys too, but I need to get out there on a day that's not all hail and snow and sleet and rain mixed together, because I need to take pictures of the outdoor signage, or none of you will believe me.

Um, okay, who put the weather on "shuffle"? *looks disparagingly at snow outside a few days after it was 70 degrees out.*

Frustrating thing #687:

Expressing concern over inappropriate behavior on someone's part, and having them respond by apologizing profusely in a way that makes it clear that they either didn't listen to anything you actually said except for "Hey, I'm upset", or that they utterly do not understand the issue.
beetiger: (Default)
So much going on here, both with stuff to share about the week with [livejournal.com profile] ladyperegrine and her daughter here, and just from the things swirling around in my head lately. More later on all of these, I think. For now, just a little picture of crafty goodness: my April Sampler contribution!

Tiger Treasure Boxes!

Only 25 of these -- they take a long time to make. They'll also be going on the Mother's Hearth site as soon as I get the new "Handmade by Hearth" section up, hopefully this weekend. I'll be offering them either empty or filled with incense goodies like frankincense tears, palo santo chips, white copal, or pure amber resin.

Dr. Ducky Doolittle is a sex educator, porn activist, clown fetishist, and just about the cutest thing you've ever seen. I've gotten myself decked out in clown gear just to go to to a club and watch her sit on a cake. She's super-sincere and loves her fans.

Now she's got a new book out called "Sex With the Lights On". I may or may not be quoted in it, since she solicited comments on her LJ for it and I participated. She's doing the promotion on a shoestring budget, and hoping to use the proceeds to write her autobiography and do stuff to help abused foster kids.

You know what? I think she can do it. She's asked people to get the word out on what she's doing, and I'm happy to help. Care to participate? Check her page out at Ducky's Home Team.
