More BPAL reviews!
Apr. 9th, 2006 09:37 pmI've gone a little Orrenish on the BPAL thing lately --joining the forums and communities, purchasing a whole bunch of imps from the thriving aftermarket, making lists of stuff I want to try, and of course, writing down reviews of everything as I make my way through them. I just realized I've got quite a backlog of unposted reviews, and at least some of you expressed interest in hearing what I thought. And, well...I owe all of you some non-whiny content.
This set is borrowed/gifted from the generous
cynthiarose. Thank you!
SCHEREZADE:
Their description: Saffron and Middle Eastern spices swirled through sensual red musk.
In the bottle: Heavy, sweet, not really identifyable.
On the skin: Cheap Indian incense/new age shop. Smells like my basement, but not as nice. No thank you!
ANUBIS
Their description: His scent is a blend of holy myrrh, storax, balsam, and embalming herbs.
In the bottle: Sweet, warm and resinous.
On the skin: Similar to the bottle, but this seems to blend with my natural scent very readily. Feels like ritual. Gets a little too male cologne for daily wear after about half an hour.
POLYHYMNIA
Their description: Orris root, white sage, rowan bark and red sandalwood, with myrrh, rosemary, lemon balm and honeysuckle.
In the bottle: Lemony floral, with a complex underpinning. Very nice.
On the skin: Not as lemony, nice complex feminine floral. I think it suits me decently as a year round floral.
lediva thinks it's "perfumy and not distinctive", and
bard_bloom thinks it smells like an air freshener.
projectmothra rated it "bad". (He's only got a two-point system.) So I guess if I use it, it should be at times when I'm alone. :P
FALLEN
Their description: Cherubic white sandalwood and golden musk with a dark halo of amber, a breath of imperial florals, unbending woods, and the shadow cast by vetiver and violet.
In the bottle: Too strong to identify indvidual scents. Light musk and rose (or is that violet?) in a heavy base. I can get the dark angel they are going for.
On the skin: Definitely one of the more complex and traditional of the offerings so far. More gender neutral as it sits. Mysterious. Violet notes coming out strong. Jasmine too, I think.
I think this one is not for me -- too Goth -- but it's well-built.
MAGUS
Their description: An ancient blend, swollen with arcane power: galangal, high john essence, frankincense, cedar, and sandalwood.
In the bottle: Masculine, heavy, herbal.
On the skin: This immediately develops a medicinal/herbal scent I don't recognize, and don't care for. Probably the galangal listed; it's musty the way I might expect from that.
BRIMSTONE:
Their description: A smoky, gritty blend, husky and gray.
In the bottle: Burnt peanut butter?!
On the skin: Don't recognize most of the notes: heavy cypress, maybe? Heavy patchouli? Cologneish. Still has a peanutty undertone. Very masculine, and pretty unpleasant.
Went to the New City Diner this weekend. I want to do a review of that place for you guys too, but I need to get out there on a day that's not all hail and snow and sleet and rain mixed together, because I need to take pictures of the outdoor signage, or none of you will believe me.
