I just made a new batch of zukoh (body incense) to put in pretty little metal tins for Harvest Home Gathering next weekend. I tested it out on my palms and now my hands smell awesome.

If you registered your phone number with the National Do Not Call Registry when the program started in 2002, you need to re-register. Phone numbers automatically drop off the list after five years, in theory to allow people who change their numbers and get recycled numbers to have the option of enjoying unsolicited sales offers by phone :P.

The good news is that it's easy to re-register.Here, have a link.

When I stayed at my inlaws at Christmas last year, the first night I was there, I woke up with a horrible wheezingful shortness of breath. Sheets were changed, down comforters that don't really get washed were removed, and in a few hours everything weas fine and I was breathing okay.

Last night we stayed there again, in a different room. This morning I woke up short of breath again. Not enough to go to a doctor or anything, but uncomfortable and scary and kind of maybe I think like what some of you with asthma might experience. A whole day, and going home, and some hot showers later, and it really hasn't gone away. I'm distressed and uncomfotable and still kind of scared.

The phone rang about 9:30 this morning, with a recorded message telling me that they would be testing the siren for the Indian Point nuclear facility at 10:00. Except for occasional bouts of activism every year or two, sadly. But I'm pretty sure I didn't miss, please let me know and I'll pass the casting director's info on to you.

Seriously considering going to Midwest Fur Fest this year. Any of you planning to be there?

Whee! After a summer hiatus from decanting, I've decided to hop back in to the fray for this update and do a decant circle, 'cause I love Halloween. I'll do up to two bottles of each scent from the BPAL side of the update. It's huge and insane! Mix and match, no minimums.

Decant prices are $3.50 for Hunter Moon, Aeaea, Halloweenies, Haunted House and Pumpkin Patch. Order the whole Patch set and you'll get a sniffie of Murder of Crows.

$4.00 for Libra 2007

Shipping is $2.50 with Delivery Confirmation, any amount.

I pack my decants very full, and usually get them out within 48 hours of receipt from the lab, because I am obsessive like that. You can find my feedback here.

Please comment with what you'd like, and thanks for playing!

Feel free to do your own math and PayPal to vickib AT bestweb DOT net, or wait for me to comment back, your choice. Please include your username and decant choices in the PayPal comments.

ETA, Monday, 7:00 pm: Order has been placed. Slots listed below are what's left. Please feel encouraged to claim any remaining open spots. :)

(ps I'm gonna leave the Trading Post stuff to someone else. This is enough for me!)

Had a reasonably nice day with my family at Dia:Beacon. Lots of sparse conceptual art featuring mirrored surfaces, which makes me feel kind of fat and stupid as much as anything else. I like abstract art okay, but I'm not big on conceptual art. Strangely, Rhys more than once seems to have stumbled upon the concepts featured in the artists statements on the pockets on the walls when he asked things about the art, leading me to believe that he's much smarter than me. (R: Why those are all grey? It's like mixing black and white, but then it's not black or white. V: *stares at artist statement, which goes on about the "Neither/Nor" concept that the large greyish reflective panels anchored to a wall are supposed to express* *boggles*)

Have eaten way too much fat and sugar vs. everything else in the last week or so. Right now my head hurts and my back hurts and my ankles hurt.and I'm cranky and exhausted and can't figure out why. Very tempted to go to bed now and set an alarm to wake up when the BPAL update goes live around 3 am.

Just a quick note to my BPAL-loving friends on this list. Although I've been taking a break from decanting for the summer, I'm planning to do a circle for the next update, which I'm assuming goes up tomorrow night and will include the Halloween scents. For those of you still poking around the edges of this craziness, the 'Weenie update is one of the biggest ones in the BPAL year, and usually includes a mix of appleish stuff, candyish stuff, and smoky fall kinds of stuff.

If you're in the market for decants, I hope you'll consider being in my circle. I don't make money on this -- it's just for fun and for me to have an excuse to sniff everything as it passes through my hands.

I'm thinking of adding a product to my "Roll Your Own Incense" kit line in time for the fall vending season/holiday shopping season. This would be similar to my Deluxe Kit, except instead of having 5 basic (single herb) scents, it would have five complex blends designed with magical purposes. The idea is that the formulation would already be keyed to the right purpose, but the magician/witch/whatever could add their specific intent to the incense as they rolled it. The blends would be herbal/all-natural, just like my other kits, so they'd be kind of different than most of the commercial magical incense out there.

So now I'm trying to decide which five purposes should be included in the kits. Would you do me the kindness of sharing your opinion?

We got up yeterday morning and went with [personal profile] projectmothra's cousins, age 10 and 13, to play mini-golf, at a course in Dedham obviously built by actual golfers. No crazy obstacles, just rocks and hilly terrain, with brown carpet "sand traps" and blue carpet "water traps", and a few tunnels. It was cool out, and quiet, and I enjoyed it. After that, I asked the kids what we should do next, and they all inexplicably agreed that the right follow up to mini-golf was bowling. We went to Needham Bowl to discover it closed, so we ended up at Pho Pasteur and ate noodles. After that, I used my GPS to find another place which had "Bowl" in the name nearby and clamed to be open in the afternoon when you called them. I informed the cousins that this was how I had an adventure.

We ended up at Ron's Gourmet Ice Cream in Hyde Park, which had candlepin bowling, which meant that [personal profile] projectmothra could handle the ball without help and therefore found it more satisfying than regular bowling. And the ice cream was excellent -- obviously handmade. I had Creamsicle ice cream that had obviously been made by adding orange juice to vanilla ice cream -- it was off white and not bright orange, and tasted juicy/creamy. Rhys got banana ice cream, which was made with extract, not bananas, but was still pretty good (and not bright yellow).

After some relaxing, we managed to pull together dinner at Asmara, with what turned out to be a group of people not quite as unfamiliar with each other as I had thought. (Everyone knows [profile] r_ness.) :) Thanks to [personal profile] kajarainbow, [personal profile] bedfull_o_books, [personal profile] porcelaingirl, [profile] r_ness, [personal profile] lediva, [personal profile] beowabbit, and [personal profile] adrian_turtle for a wonderful time. I really enjoyed catching up with you and/or meeting you in person.

Seasonal allergies are kicking my butt, but otherwise I'm really cheerful. More socializing (and more mini-golf} on board for today, so I'm happy.

[personal profile] projectmothra and I had a lovely afternoon with my old friend/girlfriend/[profile] bard_bloom's family friend Barbara this afternoon. She's just moved to the Boston area from DC to start graduate work at Tufts, and she's settling in to a lovely house in Medford, with a charming housemate and a cozy front yard, on a street that made my Prius' transmission cry. (Said Prius also hit 100,000 miles on the way there.)

Tonight (and for the next two nights), we're at [profile] bard_bloom's brother's house, and we're planning to spend the day tomorrow with [personal profile] projectmothra's cousins, before joining a random cool selection of people for dinner. (Want to join us too? Drop me a line.)

I'm trying not to stress out about the people we aren't managing to see, or any of the plans that have fallen through. It's pretty low-cost and low-effort to be here, and we're mostly here since there's no reason for us to be at home this week, so I need to remember that.

I seem not to be able to put myself to bed at 10:00, despite the rest of the household being fast asleep. So, hi there, internets! It's a little frustrating to be here in Boston and not out with some of you nightbirds, but again, not really the purpose of the visit.

Awesomest snack I've had in a while: a sandwich made with Nutella and nectarine jam I made myself from organic farmshare fruit, on 15 grain bread.

What's your awesome snack?

A few things came together today. I was going to bake cookies with [personal profile] projectmothra today, since it was overcast and I was in a kitchen mood. Then I came across this recipe, and I realized that I'd never actually made anything yeasted with [livejournal.com profile] projectmothra before, and also that I had a can of red bean paste sitting in my pantry and beckoning to me.

So, we made steamed red bean buns. I talked [livejournal.com profile] projectmothra through a simple explanation of waking up yeast. I got a nontrivial upper body workout kneading dough for fifteen minutes until it was shiny and elastic. We played board games between rising steps.

They came out incredibly well, slightly off white and maybe a touch doughier than bakery/restaurant ones I've had, but otherwise more or less perfect. They were fluffy in the middle, with an elastic skin, and they didn't unfold in the steamer and leak filling.

Here's a picture of my buns:

I'm strangely proud of myself. Also full of buns.

Okay, I'm having a declutter attack, so I'm slashing prices on the BPAL sale to near-giveaway levels. Please let me mail these to you in big handfuls. Cheap bottles, $3 LE imps, $1 GC imps. Also, I'm happy to accept trades for non-physical items. Poetry, nude pictures, usericons, stuff like that.

Please look!

The sales list is all full and ready to go to more appreciative homes. A few nice bottles, $4 LE/Unimpable/Rares, $2 General Catalog. Great discounts if you take big handfuls of imps.

Please come look!

...on a sensible project, or just a big waste of time, but I just went through the big box of BPAL stuff I hadn't tried for a quick bunch of sniff-the-vial triage, and I now have about 80 imps I'm ready to get rid of.

I'll post them in the usual places tomorrow, probably.

My nose is tired. Flomp now.

PIF meme: I will send a gift to anyone who leaves a comment in my journal requesting to join this PIF exchange. You will receive it within 365 days (actually probably a lot less than that). The only thing you have to do in return is "pay it forward" by making a similar agreement on your blog.

The "gift" you send doesn't have to be handmade. It can be fic, icons, whatever.

(Added by me: expect a physical item from me if you join this. I'll ask for your address if I don't have it.)

[livejournal.com profile] projectmothra and I went raspberry picking yesterday, and managed to collect two pounds of berries in the heat. I'm really enjoying Rhys' company these days; he's really becoming a little person, interesting to talk to, and someone I can interact with rather than just constantly worrying about. We were in a big field of bramblebushes, and it didn't matter that much if he wanted to be in a part of it where I couldn't quite see him.

A few weeks ago, he started all of a sudden with "why" questions. Some are the easy kind, science bits that I happen to know about. Some are the annoying preschooler kind, the kind that need to find rationales for house rules and circle on to themselves over and over, or the kind that find me constantly saying "Well, I made a mistake." "They made a mistake." "Probably just a mistake." It makes my world seem klutzy and careless, really. Some are complicated and interesting, and obviously showing that his little brain is doing a lot of synthesis, such as the first one he asked me in the car yesterday, on the way to berry picking. "Why if a cat is sick you take them to the veterinarian, but if a deer is sick then it is food for a wolf?"

In the last few days, he's moved into "how things work" questions. Luckily for me, a lot of them are about how various foods are made, which is a topic in which I have a decent amount of expertise. I did quite a bit of handwaving about how you build an airplane so it can fly. And we talked about doing research or experiments to find out the answer to things. And sure enough, I'm having the first round of the kind of questions about babies that make you have to listen carefully about exactly what the question is, so you don't overexplain. (In his case, he's mostly worried that since newborn babies don't really know how to do anything, how can they know how and when to get out of their mommy and be born?)

I'm willing to deal with the nightly round of "Why do little boys need more sleep than grownups?", balanced with the pleasure of watching his mind wake up.

Summer Fun

Since [personal profile] projectmothra kept bugging me because I took [livejournal.com profile] lediva to an amusement park this summer, but I hadn't taken him, [profile] bard_bloom and [personal profile] projectmothra and I drove out to Dorney Park on Saturday. Rhys was very excited to go on some rollercoasters ("I've never been on one before!"), and over the course of our conversation I was stunned to discover that [profile] bard_bloom had never been on one before either. (I have no idea how I missed that over the course of the last eighteen years or so.)

So Rhys and I went on the Woodstock Express and Dragon Coasters, which are good for 3-year olds to go on with a responsible adult, a description which fits me moderately well if not perfectly. He loved them. He went solo on the Little Lazer, which was only for people under 54" tall (I'm short, but not quite that short), and he really loved that. Rhys also took Bard on the Dragon Coaster, which is good for somewhat novelty-resistant adults to go on with an enthusiastic child. Bard did not like it. So I think once he hits 48" or so, I'll have a new coaster-buddy.

Today was supposed to be our waterpark day, but it was raining to the point of flooding out the roads, so we came home instead. [livejournal.com profile] projectmothra is incredibly flexible about things like this, so I'm very lucky.

Tired now.
