I find it curious that so many dishes are known as halvah. I frequent a Pakistani place fairly frequently and the halvah they have reminds me of a sweet version of cous cous. I need to try my hand at making Gulab Jamun.
Yup! According to Wikipedia, "halwa" is a fairly generic term for sweets. The most common types by region are sesame, semolina, and wheat "floss" style, but I've also had carrot and mung bean in various Indian restaurants.
Gulab Jamun is scary, wonderful stuff. I'm not sure I miss the Indian sweet shop on the corner next to my apartment. The staff was grumpy and I think its closing about doubled my remaining lifespan. I like burfis -- chocolate-less fudge made with nuts and milk -- too.
Gulab Jamun: Essentially a cheese ball that's deep fried then soaked in syrup. Kristy picked up some canned ones once upon a time. The nutrition facts were boggling. 128% of your daily saturated fat. Well over 700 calories per serving. There were four servings in the can, which contained roughly eight of the death spheres. We each had one and decided that was enough. They were so throughly soaked through with rose syrup that they made the teeth ache just by looking at them sideways.
