I'm glad to realize that although I'm still overwhelmed, I've gotten past the point where I'm thinking, "What the hell is this tiny person doing here and how the heck am I supposed to keep it alive?", at least most days.

This means I'm starting to think about doing things the way I think best, not just the most experdient way, at least sometimes.

And really, I'm a hippiemom at heart. So I signed up for a cloth diaper service. They show up every Friday morning with a pile of clean diapers, and take away a bag of dirty ones, and you pay them a lot of money. But you don't put a lot of piles of plastic and gel polymer in the landfill so that you can throw away a few teaspoons of urine, and that pleases me.

They're very bulky if you've gotten used to the disposables, and I think this was probably the cause of Rhys' whininess all day. We'll keep trying for a bit and see if he gets used to them. They don't seem to have leaked yet, though that may be in part because I changed him a lot, and probably went through 1/4 of my week's stash today. He's in disposables again for overnight, as I'm not brave enough to try that with the new ones yet.

Given that the bulkiness is an issue, and given that the vinyl covers the service sold me are nasty, I've also ordered a nicer cover, and also a pocket diaper, since I guess washing them wouldn't be that big of a deal, if Rhys were more comfy. I'm reading up on all of the choices, and realizing maybe I'd prefer one of these fancy brands of diapers instead. I'll probably spend too much money figuring it out.

We had to sign up for the diaper service for a minimum of a month; I'll see if Rhys is really uncomfy, or just whiny 'cause it's a change in his routine.

I know we've saved for htis baby thing for years. And I know I'm doing useful and neccessary things all around. But still, having my spouse do all the earning and me do all the spending feels really odd, and I keep being randomly squeamish about it.

I am virtually certain that, if you are "doing all the spending", it's only because the division of labor means that you're writing checks for joint expenses like the mortgage, and doing the work of shopping for things like groceries--and, yes, diapers--that both of you use.

Well, yes. It's not *sensible* for me to feel weird about it, I just do.

It might help to think of it this way: one of your jobs is bookkeeper/accounts payable.

Couple of friends I have who have small children and could probably give advice:

[livejournal.com profile] verminusrex: he runs a website selling cloth diapers and other baby things -- Clothdaddy.com. So I'm sure he not only could offer suggestions, but would be happy to do so. :)

[livejournal.com profile] sandramort: She has two young children. I'm not certain she used cloth diapers, but I'm sure she'd know something about it. She trained as a midwife, loves kids, and just generally has explored a lot of options about raising them. and she favors some "hippiemom" stuff like breast feeding, homeschooling, vegetarian diets, etc.

In any case -- good luck with it! And if you'd like, I'd be happy to relay any questions, if you're curious but not wild about talking to total strangers about childcare. :)

Several of my friends listers also use cloth diapers.

I was unable to:

- We have a pay laundry in our condo
- Lack of storage room in our place to use a diaper service. I was actually surprised to find the place I rented/bought my breast pump from was a diaper service also.

I used cloth diapers with hannah AND hauled them to a laudromat in my backpack to wash them. I was a hippie mom too in those days. :)

(edited and reposted cause I don't know how to edit an entry I put in someone else's journal)

is Nikki still in business? at the point in time I ws doing that,
that company was the premier.

Another person you might could talk to is my friend [livejournal.com profile] onecrazymother. She's been doing this cloth diaper thing for 4 years now, and is more up-to-date on it than I am.

Tell her I sent you.
