I bought the mothlet a package of linking letters, little pieces of plastic in bright colors that can make little chains, appropriate for grabbing and putting in your mouth.

The package text has the following on it:

Hidden Treasure!
Your Letter Link set contains seven special letters which represent baby's first sounds (B,D,G,M,T,C,A) These letters can be interlinked to spell seven different rhyming words. Start by creating the word "CAT". Say "CAT". Change the "C" to "B" to make "BAT". Say "BAT". Rhyming is a great way to expose baby to language.

I looked to see what was "special" about those letters in the set, but there wasn't anything. Not only that, they left the other 5 words as an exercise for the parent. (Word games are a great way to expose your adult to language!)

Anyway, so far we made him the words "RHYS", "CAT", and "FLOG". (I was going to make "FROG", but I'd already used the "R".) What other words should I make for our new language maven?

darth_riley has a toy which will either say the name of a letter when you press it, or the phonetic sound of the letter, depending on how it's set. Amusingly, at sundaygames, we discovered that it's programed not to pronounce f-u-k in sequence.

we've also discovered that children's books are a scam. Fourteen words on four cardboard pages, and they charge you fifteen bucks. I want in on that!

B and M are the anomolies in the group - the both require the closing of the lips to form the sound. Otherwise, all the sounds just require a gentle exhalation of breath while a modifying the tongue in someway.

However, in a game of "Once Upon a Time", we made up the creature 'frox' - half fox, half frog. It goes around saying 'yiffit'. ;)
