Source?
Victor Hugo?

Originally, from Victor Hugo, yes.

A musical group called Libana wrote a piece of vocal round based on it (in the eighties, I think), which is wildly popular in feminist ritual circles. It's something I find personally inspirational.

when my son (now 12) was about 6 or 7, this was his favorite song to sing.

be like a bird
who halting in her flight
on a limb too slight
feels it give way beneath her
yet sings
sings
knowing she has wings
yet sings
sings
knowing she has wings

ahhh...nice memories :)
