The alter rail in churches originally existed to keep livestock out, as people attending church often had to bring their animals with them.

The cut of the clothing that people wear in church is ranked by the ability to keep you warm. As old churches often got cold in the winter, the higher ranked you were the warmer your clothing was.

I'm sure it's only difficult in the wintertime... Although in the summer I could see some issues as well depending on if you're allowed to be skyclad with sunscreen on or not ;)
