Oh, deer!

Last night, as I was driving home rather late, I saw a deer lying on the side of the road. I got the impression it hadn’t been killed very long before, though I’m not really sure how I got that impression. I started wondering what the law in NY was around picking up someone else’s roadkill and having it butchered. I love venison.

We’ve got lots and lots of deer in in my neighborhood, considering I live in a third-of-an-acre-of-land-per-house chunk of suburbia, not far from the highway and the shopping mall. But there’s a power line right-of-way not too far from my home, and it seems to be a major deer habitat. I’ve seen deer bound across six lanes of traffic and a divider on the Taconic State Parkway. I’ve mistaken a deer for my husband when it was standing next to my mailbox. (Yes, I was tired). I’ve lost several years worth of prime quality tulips shipped to my from Holland by one of my vendors, the tops munched neatly off the morning before they would have opened fully. I even lost a young pear tree to one of them, which totally ruined the holiday partridge crop.

So I was not really that surprised, except in the “Holy Guacamole there’s something in the road” kind of way, to have a deer jump out from my yard in front of me just before I turned into the driveway last night. I braked and missed it, of course. But I admit I was tempted in that moment to speed up and fill the freezer instead.

The winter infestation of suburban lawn deer is due in a few weeks though, right after Thanksgiving. They’re made of white lights and wire, and they seem to show up on a large proportion of the lawns in my neighborhood as holiday decorations. Maybe this year I’ll follow my inspiration, and make a wire and lights sculpture of a wolf taking down one of those light up deer.

I like it kind of sweet. Caramelized onions and rosemary and peppercorns.

How about you?

I have no idea. I am making my first venison stew in years for this weekend. But it does have onions and rosemary, so PHEW (and marsala and carrots and turnips etc.)
Thank you

I don't know hunters and venison is expensive.
