Naming them all is gonna be a bitch.

[identity profile] bossgoji.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
To say nothing of house-training them.

[identity profile] beetiger.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, I'm not keeping them inside the house.

[identity profile] bossgoji.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That was a joke, dear. XD

[identity profile] beetiger.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I know. You just made me think for a second about keeping them inside the house, and...gah. :) No house-training, just watching out for the waves of "yellow rain". :P

[identity profile] bossgoji.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Could be worse. Could be chocolate rain.

[identity profile] mmsword.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You did this just because I got a new user icon that I needed to show off, didn't you?

[identity profile] beetiger.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I want a sign like that!

[identity profile] renegade-geek.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
envy, envy, envy!

[identity profile] awfulhorrid.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. That's a lot of little bitty leashes!

[identity profile] autumnquest.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
You're BEEKEEPING? What's the deal? Do you keep them indoors in the winter or since they go dormant, can they stay outside?

Congrats! That's awesome.

And might I add, ALOT of names to come up with. How on Earth will you recognize each individual? lol Or will you name just the hive mind and be done with it?

[identity profile] beetiger.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
The hive stays outside all winter. I may need to wrap it a bit to insulate it, but mostly the bees huddle up in a little ball in the middle of it and shiver till spring comes.

Generally, people name the hive, and maybe the queen. The workers get born and die off all season, so it would be kind of sad to name the individuals even if you could ID them!

I'm so excited!

[identity profile] read-alicia.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Watch out for swarming. [livejournal.com profile] spinningwheels has a story about when his wife had to chase the swarm down the street when it picked up and left the hive. She managed to grab a cardboard box to scoop them into when they finally settled down. I'm not sure if there was a second queen or not.
Anyway, congrats and I hope they stay happy and prosperous and don't expand their hive too much for you to handle! And that you share some of their golden bounty with the rest of us :)

[identity profile] beetiger.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Unlikely in the first season in a new hive, but yeah, swarming is definitely something to watch for.

And yes, provided things go well, there will be honey for everyone. :)

10,000 bees is just one hive? Whoa.

This year you'll be able to mae apple honey with your own apples and your own honey!

[identity profile] forgotten-years.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Will you be making your own mead?

[identity profile] beetiger.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Possibly. First year is probably just going to be jar honey and beeswax, but once winter comes I might try brewing.
