We picked up [personal profile] projectmothra's reading glasses today. He plopped down in the middle of the living room to test them out. (The book he is reading is "The Twits" by Roahl Dahl.)

Behold the cute.

Is Rhys doing any sort of Summer Reading Program with your local library?

He is! It's actually going wonderfully. It's one that goes by page-count, so it's motivated him to move up from the 30-page early readers to longer books. He seems so proud to read a book with 100 pages!

Geez. I can't even make it past thirty pages without getting distracted. Good show, kiddo! *grin*

Well, he's not doing it all in one sitting. :)

I'm just curious--he's got reading glasses at such a young age?

Yes. Bizzare, huh? I ended up taking him to a vision specialist despite him testing at his physician at 20/20, because his OT saw him having some serious eye tracking problems, and over the course of the testing they noticed he was already developing reading eyestrain. (yes, he's probably going to get therapy for the tracking too, but I don't know when that will happen.)

I know kids this age with general-use glasses, but this is the first time I've ever seen a kid this age with reading glasses! Then again, I don't know that many 4 year olds reading as much as he does, either.

I'm sure you've thought of this before, but just reassure me please? He's in programs where other kids can't make his life miserable for having glasses, right?

He's going to public kindergarten in the fall. We'll cross any bullying bridges when we come to them. At this stage he seems to be oblivious to teasing. He literally just doesn't notice, I've seen it. it's going to be a more general shift to maintain self esteem once that starts being a problem.

And unlike many friends of mine, long ago and today, he can see fine for general purposes without them, so he won't have the "mean people stole my glasses, now I'm disoriented and can't function" issue, at least not now.
