National Coming Out Day
Oct. 11th, 2007 05:03 pmI think I just came out --again-- to chunks of my family over the last few weeks. At various times the queer thing and the open relationship thing and the pagan thing have come up before; they ask, we tell, they get uncomfy, and then, apparently, they forget, because at some other family gathering it comes up again and they are surprised.
My little-little sister, and then my brother, and then my big-little sister, all joined/found me in Facebook over the last few weeks, most recently yesterday with my brother writing on my big-little sister's wall that he'd "found out some interesting things about our sisters" via Facebook. I fussed for a bit originally about making a limited profile for family, but then I decided not to bother. No one's said anything in particular to me, but I have to assume they know. Is the whole family gossiping about me and my girlfriend? I have no idea.
I'm not sure if it's the chickenshit approach or the gracious one to come out that way, by just kind of having information out there and public. It wouldn't really have happened before the social networking sites; there's no where I would have put a picture, a name, a list of things I'm into, and a collection of names of my friends in one place, easily accessible to anyone. But really, I kind of like this transparent world. If family wants to talk about it, they can ask. If they're uncomfortable, I don't really feel any need to put anything in anybody's face.
But yeah. I'm queer. I like men, women, neuters, and genderqueer folk.
If there's anything about you that you think I'd ought to know, or that you kind of hoped I'd notice, feel free to bring it up. Or just point me to your Facebook profile. :P
