I don't usually pay much attention to the fortunes that come out of the cookies at the end of Chinese restaurant meals, though I always make sure to read them. I always eat at least half the cookie, no matter how stale, if I want to accept that fortune as my own, but leave the whole cookie untouched if I choose to reject that fate. Occasionally they get saved -- for a while, I carried a little piece of laminate plastic with two white slips of paper embedded in it. The first was a pure expression of pure fortune: "Serious trouble will bypass you". The second was strangely evocative, and unlike any other I had ever recieved: "Because of your melodic nature, the moonlight never misses an appointment".

Sunday night's dinner offered me some fortunes which, if not predictive, were at least inspirational toward some choices I made later on. This led me to thinking: what messages could I offer people, to delight and inspire them, messages which could not come from our local eatery, but would be desperately needed? I'm a pretty decent chef, and I've got a recipe for fortune cookies that I think ought to work. I'm thinking of making cookies to give away to people at Midwest Fur Fest, the next convention I expect to attend.

There are a few obvious messages in my mind, of course:
"You will fall desperately in love with a sexy tigress."
"You will buy many many copies of World Tree."
But perhaps these aren't the messages we need.

Be my oracle, oh you friends and lovers! If I were to offer you the chance to feed the world your words in a crunchy sugary package, what would you say?

Ideas for fortune cookies for Midwest Fur Fest...

(One side): Furdom is a way of life. (Other side) Furdom is just a hobby.
Don't pull on the tiger's tail. He's pointy in five other ends.
You will go to Further Confusion. [Whoops! THat's what I should put in.]
Do not interfere in the affairs of mice, for your headfur will make excellent bedding material.

"The world is your oyster, but you can't have pearls without a little irritation."

"Love makes the world go 'round; a lot of love makes the world go 'round REAL FAST. Beware nausea."

"You will meet a tall, dark, fuzzy, stranger."

i don't know. i'm tired. :)

Well, there's the cheesy, pseudo-confuscian "Man who stand on toilet high on pot."

Then there's the cheesy, psuedo-fortune "You will meet a short, bearded Bard. He will make you hot food."

There's the downright silly, "Help! I'm trapped in a fortune cookie plant!"

Or you could look up Basho online, and put his hiku in.

I still have a fortune taped to my desk: Communication is the life blood of all relationships.

And the fortune I remember best (read aloud during a large group dinner): Man who makes love on hill is not on the level.

So as you can tell, I'm into abstractions and humor - for two sided fotunes something for both sides!

"Because of your melodic nature, the moonlight never misses an appointment"

I really like that one. It can be interpreted so many different ways!

I would also suggest, "Obscenity is in the mind of the beholder," and "Take time to stop and eat the roses."

Some that come to mind;

"The army is the boat, the people are the ocean - the people can support the boat, but they can also sink it."
"In space no-one can hear you scream."
"Picture yourself on a bridge by the fountain where rocking-horse people eat marshmallow pies."
"Be bloody, bold and resolute."
"Wind, flag, mind - when the mouth speaks, all answers are wrong."

Incidentally, would you mind terribly if I went and added you to my Friends list?

New friends
