What other people do

An old friend from a previous employer, who is currently job hunting, called me to network. (She's a lab technician; in theory, she'd work for someone like me.) She's home from work today because her brother died in an accident, and the funeral is tomorrow. She's “using the time at home productively”.

I'm an odd combination of really impressed, and really disturbed. I feel like a slacker, sitting on my tail here at my office daydreaming for pay.

Maybe she's just using the work as a distraction from her grief. *shrugs* Some people are like that, they deal with pain by diving into work. But maybe she felt a bit too messed up to come in to the office.
