...but [livejournal.com profile] chlaal did a lottery for her unused LJ paid time when her account went permanent, and I won! Woo! Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] chlaal!

In honor of this, I must make a poll!

[Poll #510420]

My cat makes this weird little brrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeet! noise.

One of our cats doesn't settle for a simple Meow. He'll usually go on for as long as he has breath: "Meooooooooooorrrrowwwwooorrreeeeeoooooowwwww."

Damn, I forgot Mmmrrrooow!

That's what I would have chosen... *grin*

I think that it depends on the feline in question, though. Different cats have very different intonations. At least one tom, when courting a queen that we had taken in temporarily, would make the most clear, precise, "Miaow" that I've ever heard.

Other cats should have taken elocution lessons from him!

Hey, only one choice?

Some of us have some diversity to our chosen method of expression.

Hmph, not all the cats got to go to Harvard. We all know you're a polyglot. You don't have to show off!

If you're so clever... let's see you roar. Yeah. That's what I thought. Not very convincing.

;)

Roaring?

Hey, Jessie doesn't roar either. Not all cats are so inclined. :) Mostly she sits at the top of the stairs, looks down, and mraos plaintively until I bring her more [fish|cookies|soda].

I had one cat that always went 'Now', enunciating quite clearly.

Lately, the cats I've run into have tried to remove my skin piecemeal, though.

“Tweet, tweet” or “squeak!”. They’re crafty little devils.

Opposable thumbs, but the truth is both of mine make all those noises and more. :)

I, fortunate person that I am, have very chatty cats. *hides*

Your human alphabet is insufficient to express the true glory of the feline vocabulary.

Besides, they have different voices. Right now, my two cats are a nice clear tenor, and a rather scratchy baritone - so the same phrases get different intonation.

The cats here don't say much beyond the occasional "mraow". Except when the too-small-to-spay cay is in heat, and she begins making these wet, complicated noises at all hours of the day and night.

"Aiou" isn't on the list. It's amazingly consistent between languages that a cat's vocalization begins with an "M" or an "N," but I honestly don't hear it.

My cats do frequently start off with a "mi" or a "mrr" sound, but in testing I have heard them start with "ai" or "ao". How about "RrrrRrrRrrrrrrr"?

You also left off "Pprrrp", "Mmrriat", and "Rriaow"
(I've been poking my cats to check their sounds against your list. )

Here's what the local couple of experts had to say on the topic;

Ginger: Mrrriau!

Pepper: Whao. Myao! Mao. Ao. Mhao. Nffft.
