Making Scents

In my neverending quest to push the envelope of furrydom and do what I feel like doing, I was thinking of doing some scent art for Anthrocon. One would expect anthropomorphics to enjoy perfumery and value it as a real artform, right?

I was hoping to custom hand blend massage oils for people according to their species and preferences, and sell these at the Artists' Alley. Unfortunately, I've just heard back from the coordinator, and this isn't a kind of "art" that's acceptable to the Alley. I'm not allowed to compete with the people who draw catgirls for a spot there. This makes me sad.

But I still kind of want to do it. Is this a stupid idea, or a brilliant one? Should I put this out on FurBid? Take preorders via LJ and bring them to the con? Would anyone want something like this?

(ps I have nothing against catgirls.)

That idea is -brilliant-, period. Absolutely brilliant. I wish that you would try to bring them to Further Confusion.

Of course, I'm crazy enough to want to go one step further, and see whether we have good enough noses to understand scent-paintings. For example:

Put the scent of fresh-mown grass across the bottom of a piece of blotter paper. Put the scent of pine along the right side. Put the scent of musk along the left side. Call the scent-painting "Wolf in forest".

Would we be able to understand that, or would the scents get too mixed together? Would it be offensive if I put that in the art show?

I would *love* to do this at FC 2006. As of now, I am planning to go to that.

I think your scent painting would be lovely. I don't know how people would feel about putting their nose up to a blotter in the art show, though!

*grin* I'd have to get some essential oils and try it out.

What kind of paper do you recommend for this experiment? How long do you think the scents would last?
