Always a reason

Every year there's been some excuse to not put air conditioning in the house, and every year I forget about it until it is so hot and sticky in here that I get headaches and feel miserable and can't function. By then, of course, it's too late to get something installed.

I had a window air conditioner, when I lived in St. Louis. We never seemed to need it in Ithaca, and it stayed in a box covered with a batik dyed cloth and served as a coffee table. In Ithaca, you can get away with things like that.

When we moved into our house in New York, we tried to put the air conditioner in the bedroom window. It got misbalanced, and fell forward into the peonies, and it was really just luck that it didn't take a finger or two of mine with it, considering how I was holding it. It was pretty much destroyed in the fall. We never got another one.

Last year's reason was that I'm losing my job, and the chances that we would have been out of this house by this time looked high from back there, so we didn't want to spend the money.

But it's August, I'm still here, and I'm not happy.
