A delight of flames!

beetigerI'm a regular at the sushi place downtown. It's pretty much the only place in the area I can go and be recognized. I go there with Bard a bunch, but I also go there with Julia, and I make a lot of random lunch dates there too. I went there during my whole pregnancy, eating udon noodles and none-raw (sic) sushi. And now, of course, I go there a lot with Rhys.
These folks just opened up a hibachi place down the road in the other direction, and we decided to have a family treat and take the little guy there. He had so much fun! He looked truly overwhelmed and alarmed when the chef started clanging his utensils on the table, and we thought he might cry -- but then he broke into the BIGGEST grin! He ate soup and rice and noodles and chicken and mushrooms, which was a great change from the nothing-eating of the last week or so. He giggled at eggs frying and got really excited to see a giant pile of rice. He jumped at the Whoosh! of fire on the grill the frist time, but then recognized it with glee whn it happened again at other tables.
The food was better than usual at these kind of places -- fresher -- even if the chefs were not quite competent yet. Ours flung a lemon into a water glass on the table, knocking it into the chair of one of our fellow diners, and the only reason not into her lap was because her reflexes were good.
And some of the staff had come over from the other place, and so they all came over to coo at the baby a bit: "How many teeth does he have now?" "Oh, cute, he's asking for more noodles!", etc., which is always fun. The owner was happy to see her customers migrating over too, I think.
Rhys was still laughing all the way home, and asked for a whole bunch of books before being settled enough to sleep.
