Creative Kareoke?
Aug. 9th, 2002 05:35 pmHave any of you ever gone to a kareoke bar and performed interesting filked versions of the songs, rather than the official lyrics? I'm not talking changing pronouns or names to sing to your sweetie; I'm talking full rewrites, all the verses, that rhyme and scan, on entirely different topics than the originals.
If not, does anyone else think doing this with a group, for a whole series of songs, would be a hell of a lot of fun?
Or am I just an incredible geek?

Date: 2002-08-20 12:58 pm (UTC)Someone handed me a microphone and had me sing "Mack the Knife." Well, I was about nine sheets to the wind, the music starts, and I burst into song. In perfect German.
"Und der Heifisch/Er hat Zaehne..." just like I was in a stage production of Brecht's Dreigroschenopfer.
And everyone in the bar, including my companions, looked at me like I had grown an extra head. Seems they were expecting a Bobby Darin impersonation, in English.
Oy.
That was the last time I'll ever do karaoke. (Although the fact that I can't carry a tune in a suitcase, and I only sing either when alone or when I'm drunker than I ever get anymore, has more to do with that than anything else.)
