In which the beetiger is actually not a complete chickenshit.

[personal profile] lediva was in town for the last few days, and [profile] bard_bloom was wonderfully flexible enough to take the afternoon off on Thursday to do child care so that the blackcat and I could have a date in the city.

The official plan had been to go wait on line at the TKTS booth in the afternoon, then go eat a nice dinner and see the show. However, we decided to replace the nice dinner part with grabbing a quick bite and try to jam a salon visit into the few hour gap instead. We ended up down at Astor Hair in the East Village, a crazy sort of basement with tons of chairs and lots of people wandering about.

I've been talking about getting the tips of my hair dyed green for years. I was going to do it when I was a "lame duck" at Seagram, because they couldn't really fire me for anything I did that was not a felony as long as I kept showing up at that point. But I was too depressed. Then I was job hunting, and then I was pregnant, and then I was trying to meet people, and didn't have any time to go to the hair salon, and I didn't want to do it myself because I was sure I'd be unable to bleach the tips evenly and I'd destroy the bathroom to boot. But I finally decided that hell, I didn't like the suburban moms I'm meeting well enough to care if I alienated them, and my self-esteem has been flagging enough lately that I needed to do something for myself, and that I really had absolutely nothing to lose. And Julia encouraged me, and actually had her hair redone while we were there, in a way much more dramatic than mine, but I'll let her show you that.

My hair is apparently hard to bleach, and it took the woman I worked with three rounds of applications to get it light enough. ("The more is it bleaching, then the color it is the more beautiful, yes?")The "Enchanted Forest" color by Manic Panic seemed just right for the dryad look I was going for. So, three hours later we were scrambling in rather lighter in the wallet and slightly late to the show (Movin' Out -- it was quite good), without having eaten at all, but we had cool hair. I'm incredibly pleased.

Green hair. Yay.

Now that I've passed *that* chickenshitness hurdle, I can maybe start thinking about my tattoo again...

Cool!

If I end up deciding to live off my financial aid and savings next quarter instead of getting a job, I am totally going royal blue again. (I think it had almost all washed out already when you were over, hadn't it? That was the third month of it, and it's only supposed to last two.)

Pretty!!! :)

yay for you! I'm still in the chickenshit mode about dyeing my hair purple (and then showing up at work). Although, given the way things are, it might be the outrageous boost I need.

Looks great! :) And yes, dark hair can be a pain to bleach.

It looks wonderful! I have been planning on coloring Cat's hair in a similar way, I just need to save enough for the color and peroxide. Brave you!

Dammit. Now I wish I were awake when she got home last night. Dare I venture into the cat's lair for a peek...? :) I don't think it's coming out so well on Rik's monitor, but I can't wait to see it in person! "Dryad look" sounds awfully appropriate for you, and you're being a very good role model since I need something like that in my life very badly, too...

nice! much less dramatic than I had pictured in my mind after the description, heh. It makes me want to do something fun with mine. :-)

W00t!

I look forward to seeing the cat's latest as well. :)

Yaaaay, green!

Purty! That's almost the same shade that I did in college. It was called "Atomic Turquoise" and it made my strip of hair exactly the same color as the little lock that my Care Bear (Wishbear) has.

Three or four months from now, you will be bleaching and dying your entire head at home. It will seem perfectly normal to you.

Nifty! You've confirmed that you must be the coolest mom in the neighborhood, guaranteed. :)

As I've mentioned, I've been toying off an on for a while about dyeing my hair. Think I'll inquire with Bosslady about at-work before I do it tho; I don't need another strike against me, but I would like to do something individual around here.

Hannah is against me dying my hiar, says it'll just be bad for my hair and that I'm too old anyway. Butterscotch likes the idea tho.

I've done Clairol colours and overdyed eggplant once, but have never BLEACHED my hair and gone extreme. I think it's a "I wanna do this ONCE" thing...

Any thoughts?
