We certainly intended to enjoy the season --the crisp warm weather, the multicolored leaves -- when we packed the little guy up in his stroller and took a walk around our neighborhood yesterday afternoon. But I was surprised at the large numbers of dead things we encountered on our ramble.

-A dead crow, sprawled on its back on the side of the road, symmetrically, beak pointing up. Eerie-looking.

-A dead squirrel, in perfect condition, curled in the street, as if it were sleeping. One of the finds that makes me want to learn amateur taxidermy one of these years.

-A dead fuzzy caterpillar, just past the squirrel.

-A dead Fun Size Three Muskeeters bar, which had gotten run over in the street. (or as [personal profile] lediva called it, a 2D3M.)

-A smashed pumpkin, which is to be expected. The totally intact pumpkin tossed into our yard that was still in great shape was a bit less expected.

-No live people who live in either my neighborhood or the next door neighborhood of People Richer Than Us, in which we were walking as well. Several contractors, one digging a foundation for a house and a few doing lawn care and one working on some sort of retaining wall, but no residents, which is odd for a Saturday afternoon in good weather.
