Hm, you've just given me another layer to the answer I give when people ask why I, a recovering ex-Catholic pagan, celebrate Christmas. (And, I might add, celebrate it like a raving mad elf!) It connects me to a part of my past that is important to me, to traditions that have always meant a lot to me. It was always a part of the year that was extraordinarily festive, where I felt closer to my family and those around me, even if they weren't Christian.
I've incorporated a lot of pagan beliefs into Christmas over the past few years, and some skeptical people will take that as an answer and accept it, but it's hard to take Jesus and "salvation" out of a lot of my favorite Christmas carols. But I can't stop singing them - they're part of who I am. Like you said, just because it isn't true, doesn't mean it's not important, at least to me.
Anyway, thanx for that new nugget in my brain. I like it :)
