A gift of a few hours
May. 30th, 2003 04:28 pmIn the summer, Cadbury closes at noon on Fridays. I was going to work all day today anyway, to catch up on a giant pile of data-entryish stuff that needs to be done before the company locks the whole formulation system to move to a new one at the end of next week, and to make a few extra dollars. Both of these are relevant to the fact that I’m taking off the bulk of next week to sneak off to
lediva’s graduation.
Unfortunately, the power for the whole building, and as far as I can tell, about a half-mile radius, went out at about 11:30. I did chores and had lunch and came back to check about 1:00, but nothing was up yet, so my plans were thwarted.
I shopped in a maternity and baby consignment store near my office, and got 3 things I’ll actually wear, for a total of nineteen dollars. I went to the grocery store and bought the season’s first cherries, and ate them out of the bag in the car as I drove home. I got my hair cut, so I don’t look stupid on stage tomorrow night. And then I went home, ozone scent of the not-quite-rain in my nose, and I walked around my yard.
This might not seem exceptional, except that I realized that I really haven’t done it at all the last few months, my daylight hours filled with a mix of busyness and collaspsing and not-at-home things. I missed the tulips entirely, never finding out if they managed to make it past the deer this year. The bulb beds have already been taken over by the annual mint, which usually gets turned into mint juleps and mint lemonage and jelly. The hostas are huge. The two purple stands of German iris don’t seem to be doing much this year, but the bloody-rust red ones seem to be budding just fine. I remember how much they surprised me, the first summer we were here. I picked up the remains of the flower bucket on the porch that collapsed over winter, a two-minute chore I’ve been ignoring for months. I waved to neighbors, who were taking walks with their kids.
Maybe some other Friday afternoon soon, I’ll even do this on purpose.
