There's the same problem with oatmeal cookies. Quaker changed the box recipe in 1987 (I saw it myself between one box I bought and the next) and the newer recipe had less butter.
Not only the flavor but the texture was affected, in that case. People fret over why they can't get their cookies to come out like their mother's. THAT'S WHY.
When I supply them with the pre-change recipe that I've preserved, they invariably report success.
