Declutter

All day yesterday, we finallly got around to finishing clearing out all of the junk from the to-be-nursery. In a fit of nesting instinct, which feels less like "ohmygodwecan'thaveababyinsuchaclutteredhouse" and more like "ohnoallmyrelativesaregoingtobetrompingthroughhereandIamjust sickofeverythingIownandIamgoingtotriponeverything", I was pretty prepared to just start randomly throwing out anything I happened to see in the house. I know a lot of this is hormonal, but the fact is that the idea of getting a lot of crap out of here was pretty reasonable. I was able to convince [livejournal.com profile] sythyry to help me out, which is impressive because "helping" in this case actually means doing all of the heavy lifting and getting told where to put stuff by a mostly-but-not-entirely-rational me.

I even was able to convince him, by virtue of it being mostly true, that cleaning out some of the large closets was actually the right way to go about this, as there was going to be no way to put away the important things that were out everywhere without clearing some storage space for them.

A few notable things:

*9600 Baud modems are probably no longer that useful. Chargers to electronic items that are not marked, so you can't tell what they were supposed to charge, also not useful. My first cellphone was very heavy, and not only because Bell Atlantic randomly screwed up my credit rating.

*Shelving, on the other hand, is *always* useful.

*When you move from years of bravely avoiding having central air to finally giving in and getting it, you end up with a lot of extra fans.

*We have too many handmade candles, and too much homemade salsa. I enjoy making and using these things very much, but apparently I enjoy making them somewhat more than I enjoy using them.

*I also have a lot of alcohol, mostly acquisitions from lab cleanouts and the modest allowance Seagram gave me over the years I was there. A lot of it is rather random, things like one of the rum bases for Captain Morgan's and stock tequila, but if anyone's having a party over the next year or so, let me make you a kickass punch bowl.

*Most things you put away and haven't touched in six years are not worth keeping. Some things, like gaming materials that [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] wrote in high school or Pagan 'zines from the early nineties, are. A few things, like clothing and kitchen equipment given to you by people who are no longer alive, aren't really, but you can't bear to toss them out anyway.

*My camping things were right where I put them. And last time I used them, I put them away right, so they are in decent shape. Since I am going camping for the first time in two years or so next weekend, this is a good thing. The queensized inflatable mattress I've gotten in the meantime even fits in there, so this will be relatively luxurious.

*Kicking up a lot of dust in the house the day seasonal allergies often start makes it difficult to tell if you are in fact having seasonal allergies or dust allergies. However, I do not seem to be allergic to the pennicillin analogue I am taking.

*Science fiction paperbacks, in a sufficiently hospitable environment, breed. Gaming books do not breed, but they follow you home when you aren't looking and hop on your shelves. So do pens. You cannot do anything about the books, but you can at least toss out the pens that don't write at all.
