It finally got back to me that someone in my mother's group was making negative comments about my hair, of the "Why would she do that"? sort.

Well, why wouldn't I? I like it, and there's not really a downside. Maybe I'm having a midlife crisis or something, but this is pretty tame stuff.

My real bravery is leaving the kidlet asleep on my bed and hanging out and doing chores. He's shown no evidence of wanting to dive off the bed head first in at least a mnth, but it still makes me nervous. He's sleeping in there a looong time, probably because he's under the weather but also probably because I haven't been in there bugging him.

I miss corporate gifts. I am totally jonesing for David's Cookies, and Joseph Schmidt truffles and Harry and David fruit and calendars with gorgeous food porn all over them.

I'm wondering how bad an idea it would be to go up to this woman and say "I heard you were wondering about my hair. Would you like to know how to get this color?"

Oooh. I like that. But I'm evil at times.

I've had comments like that on my pink hair from a few people, too. Never in person. Always from people who think "being normal" is a good thing.

Ahhh, don't worry about him rolling off the bed. I rolled off the sofa when I was about six months old onto a tile floor and I'm all just fiiiine.

... What?

Really.

Honest.

Hm. Maybe the story wasn't so reassuring after all...

I can't understand why anyone in your mother's group
would want to make your hair thier business.

Fuck 'em.

I've always found that the best response to people like that, who comment negatively on one's non-standard appearances, is to as sincerely as possible lament for their lack of imagination, in the same way as one would as sincerely as possible offer condolences for the death of a loved one.
