I was in our local upscale-grocery-that-does-it-own-baking today, and in with the cookies and cakes was a treat I associate with the Jewish New Year -- taiglach. Not marked as that, of course -- it was marked "Honey Balls" and had colored sprinkles on it instead of walnut halves, but it was clearly the tall pile of little doughballs stuck together with honey that I know and love. It's an Italian Jewish holiday confection, as far as I know, but I guess there's no reason it couldn't be stolen out as a Christmas tradition. Or maybe the Jews stole it from their Catholic brethren, I don't know. I love it. Loooove. So of course I bought one.

It was...okay. Obviously, they used corn syrup and honey instead of just honey, and they used a delicate light honey instead of the dark buckwheat honey I like in it. But I'm still very amused that they had it, and I'll probably eat it all anyway.

I think in ITalian its called strufala. Probably spelled different, but that's what they call it. Always considered it a Christmas thing.
